El IMZAD sonando en manos femeninas: breve relato sobre Argelia y su gente

Mi amigo Antonio Gutiérrez Rodriguez me mandó el mes pasado estas fotos de su viaje a Argelia. Antonio fue seleccionado como uno de los 12 artistas españoles, específicamente de Mataró, Barcelona, para exponer en la ciudad de Tamanarraset, ciudad en la se construirá un museo en honor al tradicional instrumento IMZAD. Acompañados de otros 12 expositores argelinos, Antonio Gutiérrez Rodriguez me relata acerca de la importancia del IMZAD en Argelia. El instrumento musical es tocado exclusivamente por mujeres. La exposición pictórica se realizó entre el 14 y 16 de enero de 2010. La exposición de los pintores a su vez tenía como inspiración la obra del poeta francés Paul Velaine titulado L’Art poétic.
La ciudad de Tamanrraset está localizada al sur de Argelia, es una zona desértica con predominio de la etnia Tuareg, la cual está constituida principalmente de mujeres quienes tocan el instrumento. El encuentro en Argelia además sirvió para congregar a musicólogos de todo el mundo interesados en este instrumento y la distintiva población que mantiene su vigencia. De hecho, uno de los temas discutidos fue el decrecimiento del uso del instrumento entre las mujeres actualmente. Entre las especialistas interesadas en el IMZAD se encontraba la Dr. Caroline Card Wendt de NY, quien aunque retirada, no dejo de asistir a este concurrido evento. Argelia, comenta Antonio, como país musulmán le ha dejado desde todo punto de vista una impresión muy positiva y enriquecedora.

Haiti in our hearts

Why Haiti hurts so much? How much pain can a nation resist? It is extremely painful for me to watch how Haiti goes through this devastation. I also see how the goodwill of people from all over the world, as always occurs in circumstances like these, manifests showing the goodness of human beings. I also watch people judging Haiti for not being a progressive nation. Beyond all those sociological, historical and political “reasons”, the fact is that Haiti needs, besides material help, healing thoughts from all of us. Those images of resilient people, children and adults able to smile despite the fact they don't have anybody to care for them is, in my eyes, one of best expressions of strength. Let's help them heal and believe in themselves. I believe there is future for Haiti. It is collective that won’t surrender.
Being the mother of two, I feel powerless seeing those scenes of children who have lost their parents and entire families. I wish I had the resources to take many of those children under my umbrella. Something I can say is, I wish those people who have the possibility rethink of the possibility of adopting a child, and if not, at least help to raise them in the respectful institutions that operate in the island. Finding the right institution and sponsoring a child will give the joy you ever experienced.

Today is my birthday and I feel renovated. I have hope for the future, for this present that I have. A lot of experiences to tell and live. Thinking well, I find the vision board I did two years ago was pretty close of what I have done in the last two years. I thank for my kids, my husband, my mother, my family, my new and old friends, my students, my clients and beyond. Vamos a recapitular sobre el uso de este verbo tan especial. El verbo haber tiene dos usos:
1) Verbo auxiliar, es decir, ayuda a formar tiempos compuestos.
2) Impersonal, cuando denota existencia o presencia y se usa siempre en tercera persona del singular.

Ejemplos:
*Luis ha llegado muy tarde a la conferencia (auxiliar)
*Hay jugos en la despensa (impersonal)
*Hay un jugo de naranja en la despensa (impersonal)
*Hubo un problema con mi jefe. (impersonal)
*En la escuela de mi hijo hubo un altercado (impersonal)
*Habrá un festejo en el pueblo por el triunfo del equipo de fútbol.
*Espero que haya suficiente público en el concierto.
*El año pasado hubo 10 casos de meningitis en el hospital. (impersonal)
*El alcalde Hernández dijo que hay más de 200 damnificados por las lluvias de junio. (impersonal)
*Hasta ahora no ha habido casos de influenza en la ciudad. (El verbo haber auxilia a haber, pero significa ‘tener que’. Por tal razón, no se escribe han habido en plural)

Uso de ‘haber de’ (cuando significa ‘tener que’, ‘deber’).

“El uso de tales combinaciones debería restringirse exclusivamente a la conjugación de 'haber de' (es decir con el significado de 'tener que', 'deber'): «Los responsables han habido de hacer lo que se esperaba de ellos y nada más», «Le dieron el cargo, ha habido de satisfacer todas las exigencias», «Habríamos habido de ponerlo todo en orden antes de su llegada y no lo hicimos», ya que el empleo de dichas combinaciones en construcciones impersonales no es gramaticalmente correcto, es decir, frases como «Han habido abundantes lluvias en las últimas semanas», «Han habido días de bajada de un 15%» son incorrectas desde el punto de vista gramatical, a pesar de que aparecen con mucha frecuencia tanto en la lengua escrita como hablada’ (www.elcastellano.org)

El arte de la Virgen de Guadalupe

El Renacimiento (siglos XV y XIV) ha sido y es, sin duda, el período histórico y artístico que más me ha llamado la atención desde el bachillerato. Las pinturas religiosas siempre me interesaron por el colorido y dramatismo implícito en ellas. Interesantísimo me resulta que la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe no haya sido produto de un artista en especial y tenga todos los elementos de la época. No voy a entrar en detalles teológicos o disertaciones acerca de la conquista española en México y todo lo que ello conlleva. "Los asombrosos descubrimientos en torno al cuadro de la Virgen de Guadalupe tienen a los científicos en gran asombro. Se ha formado una comisión de científicos para investigar los fenómenos inexplicables de esta tela que era la ruana o poncho del indio Juan Diego.

La Fenómeno de la Tela

Lo primero que llama la atención de los expertos en textiles es que la tela del ayate sobre el que está la imagen de la Virgen es de fibra vegetal de maguey. Por su naturaleza, esta fibra se descompone por putrefacción en veinte años o menos. Así ha sucedido con varias reproducciones de la imagen que se han fabricado con este mismo tejido. Sin embargo el ayate de la imagen ha resistido mas de 470 años en perfecto estado de conservación. Por causas ininteligibles a los expertos, el ayate de la imagen es refractaria a la humedad y al polvo.

La imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe estuvo 116 años expuesta a las inclemencias del ambiente, sin protección alguna contra el polvo, la humedad, el calor, el humo de las velas y el continuo roce de miles y miles de objetos que fueron tocados a la venerada imagen, además del constante contacto de manos y besos de innumerables peregrinos. Todo esto sin que se haya deshilachado ni desteñido su bella policromía.

El Fenómeno de la Imagen

La pintura que cubre la tela es otro misterio. El sabio alemán Kuhn, premio Nobel en Química, ha estudiado esta pintura, y su respuesta dejó atónitos a los oyentes: "Estos colorantes no son ni minerales, ni vegetales, ni animales". No han podido explicar el origen de los pigmentos que dan color a la imagen, ni la forma en que esta fue pintado.

Se podría pensar que la tela ha resistido tanto porque la habrían encolado y preparado de manera especial como a otras pinturas famosas, para que tuviera gran resistencia. Pero el Señor Callaga, del instituto espacial NASA, de Estados Unidos, la ha estudiado con aparatos de rayos infrarrojos y ha descubierto que la tela no tiene ningún engomado ni preservativos, y que no se puede explicar cómo esa imagen ha resistido cuatro siglos en un lienzo tan ordinario. Con estos rayos infrarrojos se ha descubierto que la imagen no tiene esbozos previos -como se ve en los cuadros de Rubens y Tiziano-, sino que fue plasmada directamente, tal cual se la ve, sin tanteos ni rectificaciones.

La imagen no tiene pinceladas. La técnica empleada es desconocida en la historia de la pintura. Es incomprensible e irrepetible.

El Fenómeno de las Pupilas

Un famoso oculista, Lauvvoignet, examinó con un poderoso lente la pupila de la Virgen, y observó, maravillado, que en el iris se ve reflejada la imagen de un hombre. Esto fue al principio de una investigación que condujo a los más inesperados descubrimientos.

Por medio de la digitalización se observa en la pupila de una fotografía todo lo que la persona estaba mirando en el momento de tomarse la foto. El Dr. Tosnman, especializado en digitalización, le ha tomado fotografías a la pupila de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Después de ampliarlas miles de veces, logró captar detalles imposibles de ser captados a simple vista. ¡Ha descubierto lo que la Virgen miraba en el momento de formarse la imagen en la tilma de Juan Diego!

Los detalles que aparecen en las fotografías de la pupila de la Virgen de Guadalupe son: un indio en el acto de desplegar su ruana ante un religioso; un franciscano en cuyo rostro se ve deslizarse una lágrima; un hombre con la mano sobre la barba en señal de admiración; otro indio en actitud de rezar; unos niños y varios religiosos franciscanos más. O sea, todas las personas que según la historia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, escrita hace varios siglos, estaban presentes en el momento en que apareció la sagrada imagen.

Lo que es radicalmente imposible es que en un espacio tan pequeño, como la córnea de un ojo situado en una imagen de tamaño natural, aún el más experto miniaturista lograra pintar todas esas imágenes que ha sido necesario ampliar dos mil veces para poderlas advertir.

La ciencia moderna se queda sin explicaciones ante las maravillas de la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Es una realidad irrepetible. Sobrepasa todas las posibilidades naturales, por lo que se puede decir que estamos ante un hecho sobrenatural.

Una tilma que no se corrompe. Unos colores que no fueron pintados. Una pupila que contiene toda la escena y todas las personas del momento del milagro. Estamos ante una imagen que ni el tiempo ni los atentados de hombres llenos de odio han podido vencer.

La Virgen no se impone, no reta, no humilla a sus enemigos. El milagro de su presencia en el Tepeyac es real pero muy sutil. Es un milagro que no aparece como tal a primera vista. Quiere ser mas bien confirmación de la verdad para ayudar a los corazones que se han endurecido pero que aun buscan.

Para los sencillos de corazón los milagros no son necesarios para tener fe. Ellos captan por la gracia del Espíritu el amor solícito de la Madre del Cielo que viene por ellos.

Los enemigos de la Virgen son muchas veces personas muy poderosas, pero pasan y se hacen polvo. La Virgen permanece como testigo del amor de Dios que es eterno. Ella ha querido ser un faro plantado en el corazón del continente Americano para atraer a todos a Cristo, Salvador y Vida Eterna, única esperanza ante la ruina en que se encuentra la humanidad. Ella ha querido darnos un milagro para ayudar a las generaciones incrédulas. Ha querido demostrar con su característica humildad, que la ciencia tiene su función pero también sus límites. Ella nos recuerda las palabras del ángel: "Para Dios nada es imposible".

A terrific workout: Masala Bhangra!

What a workout I got on Saturday. I took the Masala Bhangra workout at the Alvin Ailey in NYC. It was a fantastic! I was enchanted by the routine and the guidance of Sarina Jain. The spirit in the room was inviting and we were so focused on the routine, despide being the first time for most of us, it was not hard to follow. I think she does a terrific job, due her experience teaching fitness, she instruct the class very professionally. She is quite nice, I have to say, at least that's what she transmits. I am planning to take more workshops with her and beyond that, I want to explore more Bhangra, Bollywood and classical Indian dance (Bharatanatyam).
On the other hand, another beautiful dance I will be studying is Flamenco. Since my childhood I have been seduced by this dance and for whatever reason I did not get to study it. It is not too late, I will do it and I will be writing about it. I feel Flamenco very deep in my heart.

According to the website the conception of the this innovative workout came once Sarina Jain and her sister condensed their fitness experience with Bhangra movements. Masala, which in Hindi means "spicy" and Bhangra "the traditional folk dance from the northern state of Punjab, India" .

Saturday Zumba in South Orange, NJ at 10:45 am

Basic 2 Workshop

I am also very excited because I will be taking the Basic 2 on Sunday with Tanya B in Rockville, New York. I can't wait to see more advanced steps to the ones I already use. Before I started Zumba back in November 2008, by accident, by "causality", I don't know, I was taking care of my business (mural, calligraphy, interpretation and so on) when I got a call from Maggy D’Stefano. I was so reluctant to embrace another project at the time, but I also have to recognize that I did not understand the Zumba concept. Let me say it honestly, I underestimated Zumba, because I ignored what this was about. After my conversation with Maggy, I thought about the idea and as a loyal Scorpio made a "fast" decision.
Anyways, I had one class at Studio Yoga; Christmas came and I gained weight (6 pounds) to be exact (I am only 5’ 4’’). So, great! Now instead of 15 pounds, I had to lose 21 pounds! I remember the day I weighted myself and convinced myself the scale was not working and I needed to get rid of it. Well, I was in denial. I took my Christmas picture and when I went to get it I saw myself so big that I thought the photographer hated me and made me look bigger on purpose. How can it be possible I look so huge? I did not buy too many of those pictures by the way!

Well, I was in shock. I went home and found the willpower to stop the cycle. I disciplined myself since January, but it was really in February when I took extra Zumba classes, 3 to be precise when I saw something really magic.
I must say that I have never seen a system “as seen on TV” can melt “literally” the pounds so fast and consistently like Zumba. My confidence was back in place, exactly where I wanted it. I am not there yet, I need to lose at least 15 pounds, but I can tell you that two or three Zumba classes a week, cutting calories, eating healthy and smarter will be enough to achieve the results you always wanted. And I am being serious and crystal here. If you want to go for more, I would suggest one massage a week –ideal if your finances allow you-. The massage helps you to drain water, stimulate circulation and liberate toxins out of your body. If that is not enough I would add meditation or prayer anytime of the day. Visualize yourself the way you want to be, thank for all you have, don't be afraid to ask the Universe for more. Help yourself, your loved one and those you don't know. And last but not least, twice a week, 10-20 minutes of weight training, will help to tone your problematic areas. Although you do it automatically with Zumba, it is always good to reaffirm and fight gravity.

We assume everybody knows what Zumba is, but I might get a visitor who doesn’t. So, I am going to explain:
Zumba “is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music and dance movements, which create a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system! This class format combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve an unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits” (www.zumba.com)

A Zumba class can be taken by anybody. You will be introduced to rhythms such as Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Flamenco, Tango, Belly Dance, Bachata, Reggaeton, Hip Hop and beyond! The possibilities are endless.

Zumba was created by Alberto “Beto” Perez who is originally from Colombia and came to the US with the clear intention to spread this concept of a cardio/aerobic/dance system. If you want to read more about Beto and his incredible story, please go to the official site of Zumba.

Spanish expressions "a nivel de/ al nivel de" and Dequeismo

Since I started the course in Translation, I have been confronted to my weaknesses not only in English but also in Spanish (and I am a native, but that doesn’t make me perfect). So, I decided to write about those tricky terms I find all the way and share them on this blog. I’ll be glad if this info is useful to somebody else. Most of the explanations will be in Spanish, so if you are a student of the language, you won’t have problems understanding. Let’s talk about “ a nivel”.

A NIVEL DE/ AL NIVEL DE (Source Fundéu)

Ambas se pueden usar en sentido figurado cuando denoten “altura”. Por ejemplo:

La votación se hará a nivel de escuelas primarias.

Zumba is shaking South Orange, New Jersey!!!

I was contacted by Susan Ball to teach a Zumba class on Saturdays at 10:45 am in South Orange. What a surprise I got today! The town is in first place lovely, second we had the class at Bernard's gallery, whose artwork is by the way beautiful. His use of colors is eye-catching; and then we had the most welcoming and outgoing people who have never tried Zumba before and gave the best of themselves. I was amazed how well they picked up all the steps from cumbia, cha cha, belly dance and tango. And they assured me it was the first time. Hard to believe because of the swing they showed throught the class. I had a blast. I sincerely did.
Susan is also offering Zumba on Mondays at 7:00 pm with Sammy Salazar. He is also from Venezuela and everybody is talking about Sammy, because he is just great an carismatic.
Once you try Zumba you won't stop doing it. You will be hooked!

Zumba with Beto and Tanya B. in NY

I went to Beto's Zumba master class last night (February28th) at the Marriott Marquis in New York. It was really nice, I imagined I couldn't get in but there was enough space. The energy was high and we danced for almost two hours. Here are some picks! I am going to sub Sammy Salazar in South Orange tomorrow Monday at 7:15 pm. I hope to make him proud. The tricks of the Verb Haber in Spanish

As a Spanish native speaker I have to admit the verb Haber is one that causes us the most headaches. I can’t imagine how it can be for a non-Spanish speaking person interested in learning the language. It could be even more surprising that those who study “Castellano” or Spanish as it is well known nowadays, probably have a better understanding of this peculiar verb and they probably don’t confuse or misuse it.

What’s the big issue with this verb? Why we hear people saying: “hubieron muchos muertos en ese accidente”, “habían 45 cajas de cerveza”. Let’s clarify this point.

1) The verb HABER is an auxiliar verb and it helps to other verbs as we know in English and other languages.

He tenido un día lleno de sorpresas
Si hubiese contado con más dinero, habría comprado más vestidos

BUT, when the verb HABER is not followed by another verb (past participle), then it has the function of an IMPERSONAL verb: In this case, Haber means existir, ocurrir, estar, encontrarse (please check Fortunato Brown “Mejore su castellano en 30 días). The verb is conjugated in third person (in all tenses: present, past, conditional, future, etc), as long as you conjugate it in THIRD PERSON YOU will be fine. Example:

¿Cuántos muertos hubo en la explosión?
Creo que hubo por lo menos 7 heridos y 3 muertos.

Había muchos libros en la biblioteca de mi casa.
Hay muchas personas esperando por ti.

Nota: Cuando hablamos de existencia, cantidades, generalmente el uso del verbo HABER es impersonal, es decir, no va acompañado de otro verbo en participio pasado, por tanto, la conjugación va en tercera persona del singular.

¿Por qué HUBO Y NO HUBIERON?

We can use hubieron when we are refering to Pretérito Perfecto simple o Pretérito (Simple past)

Example:

¿Qué pasó con tus invitados?
No hubieron llegado a tiempo (It is an auxiliar)

Note: The impersonal sentences do not have a subject and the verb goes in third person of the singular.

CORRECT
Hay una mala noticia que tengo que compartir contigo
Hay malas noticias que tengo que compartir contigo
Había un solo cliente en la tienda
Había muchos clientes en la tienda
Habrá una gran fiesta el martes
Habrá varias fiestas el próximo mes

¿How many there was/were? You must ask yourself first. It doesn’t matter how many, the verb Haber is impersonal in these cases, so it goes in third person.

The same principle we apply for Haber when is impersonal applies to other verbs followed by Haber in infinitive. Example:
Suele haber mucha gente en esa clase (Never “Suelen haber…)
Puede haber conflictos con el Sindicato (Never “Pueden haber…)

I returned to my belly dance classes. I started this time with Gabi Marzec, she reminds me a lot the Shena Bek, for the gracefulness and precision. Gabi is a performer serving all New Jersey, New York and beyond. She also teaches at Studio Yoga in Madison, New Jersey and performs at Marakesh restaurant in Parsippany, New Jersey. Arabic lessons in New Jersey

Learning Arabic from the perspective of a Spanish speaking person

Two months after I had my last child, I enrolled in a Belly dance class. I got hooked with the dance but it was not too easy in the beginning. The technique was quite different from latin dances which I am very used to. The isolation of muscles is still something I don't control entirely, but I keep working on it. Beyond and along with the dance, I was captivated by the music. It really touched my heart, although I had not idea of the meaning of the words, there was something magic about the music that made me love the dance even more but it made wonder about the meaning of those lyrics. I always had de impression that Arabic was difficult and impenetrable so I delayed any attempt to learn it. This January while surfing online I read about Arabic private lessons, then I got this impetus to try. Enrolling in College looked too frightening for me, because I did not have any prior reference of the language, but the one on one session seemed to be right for me.

That's how I met Ann. I am glad I called her and gave it a try. I am fascinated with the language, although I can't study as much as I should, due my multiple obligations I have a special place for the language.

Arabic, from the perspective of a Spanish speaking person is not as hard as I thought it would be. It is not easy either. I have also the vicious habit of the "R", Portuguese "R", French "R", Spanish "R" and English "R". Whenever I feel lost I run to one of these languages to help me out. I feel the sound of many words resemble more to the Spanish "R". At least, that's what I perceive.

Ann tried to introduce me to the written Arabic and the first lesson was great, the second one, she added four more letters. Tiny steps to build up vocabulary. I also like the Arabic Calligraphy which is not divorced of my artwork. I might contemplate to learn it when I capable to really write and read.

I did not want to finish without giving you few words Ann has taught me. I also have to say that sources like YouTube, amazon.com, online dictionaries, etc are very helpful to find material and of course, the music, if you like it.

At first I thought they were fellow country from Caracas (Venezuela), but no, the ladies were from Panama. Our conversation lasted for a couple of hours, time when idealistically we solved the problems of Panama, Venezuela and throughout America. What I can assure you is that both ladies caused me a very good first impression.

The next day of our stay in Cancun, we met at the hotel and crossed greetings. We saw Lorena (daughter), the child who is just beautiful and sweet, the grandmother (Moty) and the husband (Juan Carlos). Honestly, no idea who he was. The husband was a polite and affable man. Later I knew they were the Varela family. She, Lorena Castillo de Varela, he, Juan Carlos Varela, Lorena's mother, Moty a lady who is very enjoyable. Mr. Varela was very affectionate with his child. I found much candor and humanity in the way he treated the child and the little boy from whom I reserve the name to preserve his privacy, also showed much affection for his father. Natural thing, you might think, but I noticed that it was indeed a father who cared and enjoyed being with his children.

When I found out that Mr. Varela aspired to the presidency of Panama, regardless of political disputes that arise in any election and without detracting from the rest of the candidates who I do not know and I do not even know if I will meet someday, I thought it would be interesting and beneficial if in the continent arises a wave of transformation, this time a real and effective one. I illusion, I must say, the possibility that a young person of the same age of the president-elect of the United States, Barack Obama has the desire to compete for presidency.

Lorena is the mother of three boys and a journalist by profession. She is a young woman, dynamic and intelligent. She speaks English very well, like his mom. In addition to emanate much ease and compassion for the less fortunate, also expresses a passion for the causes she believes. Lorena meets the credentials of a potential first lady of modern days, those who use the platform to change the status quo and bring change to people. My understanding is that Lorena still has TV programs-documentaries of social and communitarian content in Panama.

The Panamanian people, mirror of all the peoples of Latin America, marked by the disparity and social injustice might give people an opportunity to ready emerging intellectual, social, and managerial cultural talking. Varela has the slogan "Change we can trust." Panamanians have often relied on other politicians and have been disappointed. The faith of the people, as has occurred countless times throughout history in Latin America for wear, but there is always room for hope and reinvention. That is the essence of human nature. Varela may need only one chance to prove that his word is consistent with the facts and what better stage than the presidency of Panama.

From any trench can serve the country, but the appeal to compete for the presidency of a nation does not seem to be something that attracts the vast majority. I do not know the other candidates competing in Panama, and therefore this review is anecdotic more than anything else, but from this perspective, I wanted to share what I saw and my experience with the Varelas.

From a personal point of view I wish you success, because they feel they have good intentions, and they do not stay in attempts, but I see a determination to run and not stay in the rhetoric. Panama's elections will be conducted next May 3, 2009. In addition to Juan Carlos Varela (Panameñista Party), the rest of the participants in the electoral contest are: Balbina Herrera of the ruling party (Partido Revolucionario Democrático), Ricardo Martinelli for Democratic Change, Guillermo Endara (former President of Panama, representing Moral Vanguard Party of the Fatherland).

Juan Carlos Varela: ¿cambio en el que Panamá puede confiar?

En Agosto del año pasado mientras mi familia y yo pasáabamos un días en México conocimos a una familia muy particular. Inicialmente conocimos a madre e hija, ambas muy amables y sociables. Al principio creí que se trataba de connacionales caraqueñas (venezolanas), pero no, las damas eran de Panamá. Nuestra conversación se extendió por un par de horas, tiempo en el que resolvimos utópicamente los problemas de Panamá, Venezuela y la América toda. Lo que si les puedo asegurar es que ambas señoras me causaron una muy buena primera impresión.

Al día siguiente conocimos de nuestra estadia en el hotel nos encontramos y cruzamos saludos. Vimos a Lorena (hija), al niño menor quien es simplemente hermoso y dulce, a la abuela (Moty) y al esposo (Juan Carlos). Honestamente, ni idea de quién se trataba. El esposo me resultó un hombre educado y afable. Más tarde supe que era la familia Varela. Ella, Lorena Castillo de Varela; él, Juan Carlos Varela, la mamá de Lorena, Moty quien es una señora muy amena.

El Sr. Varela se mostraba muy afectivo con el niño. Encontré mucha candidez y humanidad en la forma como trataba al hijo, y el niño -de quien me reservo el nombre para preservar su privacidad- también mostraba mucho afecto por su padre. Cosa natural, pensarán ustedes, pero ciertamente noté que era un padre que se preocupaba y disfrutaba estar con sus hijos.

Cuando supe que el Sr. Varela aspiraba a la presidencia de Panamá, independientemente de las disputas políticas que se suscitan en cualquier contienda electoral y sin desmerecer al resto de los candidatos a quienes no conozco y no sé si algun día conozca, pensé en lo interesante y beneficioso que sería que en el continente se genere una ola de transformación, esta vez real y efectiva.

Me ilusionó, debo decir, la posibilidad de que una persona joven, de la misma edad del presidente electo de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama tenga el deseo de competir por la presidencia.Lorena es madre de tres varones y periodista de profesión. Es una mujer jóven, dinámica e inteligente. Habla muy bien inglés, al igual que su mamá. Además de emanar mucha soltura y compasión por los menos afortunados, también expresa pasión por las causas en las que cree.

Lorena reúne las credenciales de una potencial primera dama, de las modernas, aquellas utilizan la plataforma para cambiar el status quo y llevar el cambio a la gente. Entiendo que Lorena aún realiza algunos programas-documentales de carácter social y comunitario en Panamá.

El pueblo panameño, réplica de todos los pueblos latinoamericanos, marcados por la disparidad e injusticia social podría darle una oportunidad a gente emergente preparada intelectual, social, cualtural y gerencialmente hablando.

Varela tiene como consigna "Cambio en el que podemos confiar". Los panameños han confiado muchas veces en otros políticos y han sido defraudados. La fé de la gente, como ha ocurrido innumerables veces a través de la historia latinoamericana se ha desgastado, pero siempre queda espacio para la esperanza y la reinvención. Esa es la esencia de la naturaleza humana.

Varela tal vez necesite sólo una oportunidad para probar que su palabra va acorde con los hechos y que mejor escenario que la Presidencia de Panamá.

Desde cualquier trinchera se puede servir al país, pero el llamado a competir por la presidencia de una nación no parece ser algo que atraiga a la gran mayoría. No conozco al resto de los candidatos que compiten en Panamá, y por tanto esta reseña es más anedóctica que otra cosa, mas desde esta perspectiva he querido compartir lo que vi y mi experiencia con los Varela.

Desde un punto de vista personal les deseo éxito, porque siento que tienen buenas intenciones, y éstas no se quedan en intentos, sino que percibo una determinación por ejecutar y no quedarse en la retórica.

Las elecciones de Panamá se realizarán el próximo 3 de Mayo de 2009. Además de Juan Carlos Varela (Partido Panameñista), el resto de los participantes en la contienda electoral son:Balbina Herrera por el partido oficialista (Partido Revolucionario Democrático); Ricardo Martinelli por Cambio Democrático; Guillermo Endara (ex-Presidente de Panamá, representando al partido Vanguardia Moral de la Patria).

The 2009 VIRUS in my computer!

It is almost over. The year is gone but I am optimistic for the future. I keep doing Zumba, painting, doing Calligraphy and raising my two boys to name few things. I couldn't miss the opportunity to talk about the horrible experience of having a virus in my computer. It was devastating because I handle all my activities online. I got somebody first who helped me but the 2009 virus was not erradicated completely, so in an attempt to find a solution I checked the Craigslist. For many of you that's the last place you would look, but let me say that it was great. We have to be very careful with the site because we all know there are too many unscrupulous people in it, but there are good too.

I called this person and I couldn't be happier. He killed the virus and he also taught me how to keep my computer safe. Good sign when somebody tries to educate you instead of hiding knowledge from you.

A lot of people have been caught with this Warning sign of virus in your computer. According to Eddey the "people" operating this fraud made around $30 million last year. Be careful out there. They have a logo that's exactly like Microsoft. Usually you get it through an infected email. The email could look harmless from one of your mail list.

LA ZUMBAMANIA LLEGO PARA QUEDARSE!

Why do we feel so good after a dance class? Why do we feel extremely content after a Zumba class? I think the answer is because in Zumba there is not pressure to learn a technique, counting or be a perfect dancer. The goal is to have fun and get a great workout. That's the beauty of Zumba. Growing up in Venezuela, and I am sure in any other Latinamerican country, the rule of thumb is to party mixing all kinds of rhythms. As a child I was not taught to define Cha cha cha, rumba, mambo, salsa or merengue. We just knew it, the social enviroment, the TV (mexican movies were my masters of cha cha cha, mambo and the rumba), the family reunions, etc, etc...helped to set the dances in our minds and souls without consultation.

That's an accurate description of who I am. I learned everything on the streets, dancing, dancing and dancing, but I was always a good observer and better imitator. I had some variety growing up, some jazz which gave me a really good notion of body postures. I enjoyed dance and music from different countries since I was little. Fortunately in Venezuela there is openness to foreign music and that was great for me. I don't recall specific choreography that involved counting, instead we flew with the music.

When I attempted to teach Salsa last year, I had to learn to count, verbalize every move and I have to admit it was challenging. After a Zumba workshop I have realized I have to go back to my original system. No counting!!! I was scared in the beginning, but it is simpler than I expected. I am in love with the system. There is coordination and repetition involved, obviously, but zero pressure of counting.

It makes a lot of sense to me. I think Zumba is well-articulated. The organization behind makes this workout a growing and powerful tool to enjoy life, fitness and take the stress out of our minds, at least for an hour or so, although the effects of exercising last longer than that. Our perspective of life changes also.

It is part of human nature to respond to positive stimulation. That's why Zumba has been so successful and basically because the musicality of latin rhythms is unique. I always loved to incorporate dances of all kinds; Zumba condenses the latin style with the fitness touch and I think the world will continue to respond to Zumba because of the simplicity of the method and the freedom to use latin music as other styles as well.

Zumba workshop

I had a long day today in Manhattan. It started at 6:30 am when I left my home, took the train to avoid the parking hassle. It was the best decision. I went to a Zumba workshop with Ali Ramirez. It was better than I expected, she is full of energy. It looks simple from outside when you are not familiar with Zumba, but there is definetely a lot to think about. I took the Gold Zumba and I am planning to go for the Level 1 or Level 2. The market for beginners, older people or just adults who haven't been working out for a long time is big. It is also nice and inviting to teach to this population. But I am also very interested in the regular Zumba class. I will go for it.
I think Ali Ramirez is a lovely woman, she doesn't stop smiling anytime. It was very nice to have her as the first instructor for a Zumba workshop. She was extremely helpful.
I am glad I made the decision.

My birthday

One more year! I feel I have lived many experiences this year and I have learned as much as I could. I embrace this new birthday with optimism and the conviction of helping other human beings. I plan to go back to school, dance, paint, be happy, learn new languages and more! I ask the Universe without hesitation, because I believe abundance comes from God. The best learning is that my perspective about life has improved. I have a calmer view of things, although I haven't lost the sense of pursuing my dreams. I recognize how inmense the Universe (s) is and I know the possibilities are endless.
I congratulate myself for this day and feel grateful for all my blessings. Thank you to all of you who have been kind enough to remember my birthday. It means a lot to me. I sincereley appreciate it!
Well, I am going to celebrate with my family, my little boys, my husband and my mother who is spending a valuable time with us. I want to stretch everyday my mother is here with us. She understands me like nobody else. I am blessed to have her with me.

The self-taught artist and the trained artist

I am a self-taught artist and always wondered how a trained artist feels inside. From my perspective, everything is intuitive with a background of voices in my head from the past. It might sound strange for some people, but it is exactly how I perceive it. It is a fast process that I am not aware when is happening, but I technically feel what I should do next, the rest is imagination, survival, intention, etc. The problem is that I am always in constant denial and doubt because -in my case- I feel it would be easier if I had attended Fine Arts school.
I would love to know how you guys feel and perceive your own creative process.

Camouflage mural for a baby's room

A wonderful couple from Sussex county, New Jersey contacted me to bring to life a camouflage mural for their baby due in December. The project seemed to be easy, but it was a little bit challenging, however I had a great time creating it. It demands a lot of time and patience. I love the results and my clients too. This is definetely an unique boy's room. The whole concept is mine (color of the room), but the idea of having camouflage was entirely from my clients. I will post pictures when the room is set. Check these one out in the meantime.

Transformation of old bathroom with a japanese touch

I was so tired of the grey tiles in our bathroom that one day I made the decision to change it. I am still trying to figure out how I am going to seal the bathtub area, pictures of this part will be posted in few days. Obviously, remodelation was my preference, but as you can imagine, that was too expensive at this time. I am pretty happy so far. I am working on details, but it came out better than I expected.
